Inspired by nature, the artist Galatea revolutionized the process of pearl culturing in 2001 and produced the "Mercy Pearl". Not sure whether to call it a pearl or a gemstone - it is a combination of the two. It is created by inserting tuquoise beads into a black lipped oyster, causing the oyster to secrete nacre around the gemstone ( a natural defense mechanism when an irritant is present inside the oyster). After the pearl is harvested, the nacre is carved away revealing the gemstone beneath.
J.R. Dunn Jewelers offers various pieces of this innovative and striking Galatea line, which includes necklaces, pendants and rings.
"When an oyster swallows a grain of sand it feels discomfort, so it begins to ease the pain by applying a coat of nacre (pearl). It is during this healing process that it creates a beautiful pearl. This is like life itself. It is easy to love in good times, but it takes courage to love through the discomfort of our lives. The gemstone represents the grain of sand, the beauty inside, and the pearl evokes an aura of love, courage and healing. It is this unique transformation that has given birth to the 'Mercy Pearl' Beauty Inside." In the words of Chi Galatea Huynh.
